Nov. 10th: Partners for a Bold Future Breakfast

Now in our 16th year of delivering youth programs, Colorado Youth at Risk continues our mission to empower teenage students to make life choices that positively impact their future through community-based mentoring and intensive training. Our goal is to match students with an adult mentor to reduce the number of high school dropouts, and provide students with a sense of the future and their place in that future.

Many people are shocked to find out that the graduation rate for Denver students is 50%, and even lower in the male African American and Latino populations. However this is an unfortunate reality and one that we feel strongly about impacting. At Colorado Youth at Risk we are proud that 95% of the youth we serve stay in school and 97% of the youth in our programs graduate from high school with a post secondary plan in place.

The following are some of the highlights of 2009 we are particularly proud of:

•    We will serve 250 youth this year, more than we have ever served in our one-to-one mentoring program.
•    We received an expansion grant expanding our services into three new counties in Colorado (Logan, Elbert and Arapahoe) , serving youth beyond the Denver metro area  for the first time.
•    Our Board of Directors has grown from 9 people to 14 people in one year.
•    Our infrastructure has been strengthened to support our expansion, therefore having the capacity to serve 350 youth in 2010.

In spite of the difficult economic conditions of 2008 and so far in 2009 Colorado Youth at Risk has risen to the challenge.

We are expanding the number of youth we serve because the need in our communities is greater than ever and we produce tremendous results creating demand for our services

Another interesting fact is that every youth that drops out of school will cost society $200,000 in social services over a person’s lifetime. In the words of Ana, a youth involved with Colorado Youth at Risk, “Steps Ahead made a difference in my life by helping me to be more confident and go on with school.” Ana graduated in May 2009 and will be attending Metro State College in the Fall of 2009.
