CYAR to Roll out 3 New Programs!

It has been a busy spring at Colorado Youth at Risk with the launch of our sixth program at George Washington High School, our 5th Annual Toast the Future Silent Auction and cocktail party and exciting news on the grant front.

We are pleased to announce that we received a significant grant from the Statewide Strategic Use Funds (SSUF) of $143,441! This grant money will allow us to expand our services to three new counties. We will be expanding to Logan County, serving the town of Sterling; Elbert County, serving the high school in Elbert; and Arapahoe County where it is undetermined which school will be partnering with us at this time.

In Sterling we are partnering with the Family Resource Center to deliver a Steps Ahead Program to 20 high school students. The end of March John Laney and myself delivered a one-day workshop to 28 community leaders who are working together to make a difference with truancy among high school students. It was a successful workshop and nine people who didn’t intend to become mentors said “yes” by the end of the day. We will be launching a program with the 20 youth in Sterling in the Fall of ‘09.

In Elbert County our long time volunteer and one time staff member John Reardon will be heading up starting a Steps Ahead Program in the Elbert Community. Not only is John well trained on our mentoring model but he is a long time resident of Kiowa, in Elbert County. We will be launching a program in Elbert County with 30 high school students, also in the Fall of ’09.

We have also hired long time volunteer John Laney as our Program Director to launch the three new programs associated with our expansion. John Laney has been a mentor, has trained 100’s of mentors over the last ten years and has graduated 27 leaders from our adult Leadership Training Program. Because of the success of our Leadership Training Program we are well situated for expanding our services to other communities.  Welcome to both John Laney and John Reardon!

Thank you to all of our funding partners who have so generously contributed to our organization allowing us to grow.  We are excited to become true to our name “Colorado” Youth at Risk and to begin to serve students in other areas of the state.

New Program Launched! PDF Print

Her entire body is shaking.  It soon becomes clear that this young woman’s shaking is in stark contrast to the normally lucid movements that typify her ghost-like behavior.  Until now it was almost easy not to even notice her.  But the shaking is in obvious response to the 35 feet she has just put between herself and the ground by climbing the platform to the leap of faith on the ropes course.

There are tons of shouts of encouragement coming from the ground, below; from youth and mentors alike…but in her mind, all that she can hear is the screaming of the little voice in her head telling her that she needs to stop doing this RIGHT NOW!

And then something switches.  You can almost see it happen, as she begins to force her thoughts into the background.  She takes one step forward, and then another; to the edge of the platform.  Then, in a voice never heard before she shouts loud and clear, “My name is Saprea, and I am jumping for my goal in life to graduate high school, go to college and become a doctor!”

Without hesitation she rears back and leaps from the platform, agile as a leopard.  While mid-air all that is present is the determination of an Olympic athlete; reaching for the trapeze laid out 8 feet in front of her.  It all happens so quickly.  She misses the trapeze, and the rope goes taut as gravity takes hold.  But as she is lowered to the ground, her grin says it all; “I am a new woman...and I will never forget that anything is possible!”

Saprea’s story is just a small representation of the dozens of miraculous breakthroughs that happened during this month’s Launch Course for George Washington High School (GW6).  GW6 just launched as a new program and we are excited to have 36 brand-new mentor/youth pairs off and running on their year together.  Bon Voyage...GW6.

CYAR Youth Awarded Daniels Fund Scholarship PDF Print

Vanessa Quintana, a current participant in our Touchstone program, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. Vanessa was chosen from a field of over 2,000 applicants to be awarded one of 263 full college scholarships. She completed a rigorous application and interview process to receive this scholarship, awarded on the basis of academics, community involvement, and financial need. Vanessa’s experience at CYAR, as well as her activism with organizations such as Students 4 Justice and Metro Organizations for People, and her leadership as student body president at Colorado High School Charter made her an ideal candidate to become a Daniels Scholar.

Vanessa aspires to use her college education to make an even bigger impact in her community. She wants to get the tools to make a difference in a big way, possibly by getting involved in the field of public policy, education, community organizing, or criminal justice. Vanessa will be using her scholarship to attend Hastings College in Nebraska next fall. She chose Hastings because she plans to pursue their unique major called Peace, Justice, and Social Change with a double major in Political Science.

In her own words, Vanessa speaks to who she wants to be for her community, as well as the impact that participating with CYAR has made for her: “I found the motivation to break the cycle of dropping out of high school and the desire to inspire my peers to do the same. I am now an Activist that inspires people to better themselves. I will find a reason to motivate the unmotivated to take a risk and to improve their lives. I am a future politician that will positively impact my community and city. I will create opportunity for the less fortunate and spark a light of hope for those who are in the dark. I am a stepping stone for others to create a better life as CYAR was a stepping stone for me, in time of great need!”

MORE Information about the Daniels Scholarship:

Two Hundred Sixty-Three high school seniors from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming who have demonstrated strong character and a determination to succeed in life have been named Daniels Scholars and will receive funding to attend the college or university of their choice, it was announced today by Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund.

“These are promising and motivated students determined to succeed in life, but lacking the financial resources to continue their education,” explained Childears. “They are outstanding young people and the Daniels Fund is proud to partner with them as they fulfill their dreams of attending college,” she said.

With the announcement, the Daniels Fund will surpass 1,765 scholarships awarded since the program was launched in the year 2000. The group of new Daniels Scholars includes 181 from Colorado.

To identify candidates for the scholarship, the Daniels Fund partners with youth serving agencies and college prep providers that nominate candidates for the Daniels Scholarship. After being nominated, candidates take part in an interview and selection process in the communities in which they live.

In establishing the Daniels Scholarship program, cable pioneer Bill Daniels was seeking promising students with financial need whose academic performance may not necessarily reflect their potential, but who demonstrate strength of character, a well-rounded personality and a record of accomplishment in giving back to the community.

The Daniels Scholarship is not “full ride,” but is supplemental to all other financial resources, including an estimated family contribution, available to the student. By requiring students to apply for other readily available financial resources such as Pell Grants, the Daniels Fund is able to provide even more scholarships to deserving young people seeking to attend college.

After other financial aid resources have been applied, the Daniels Scholarship covers all required tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies and a variety of other miscellaneous expenses. Students also receive a laptop computer and a printer.

Bill Daniels, a cable pioneer known for his kindness and generosity to those in need, established the Daniels Fund in 1997 to provide grants and scholarships in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. When he died in the year 2000, his estate transferred to the Fund, making it one of the largest foundations in the Rocky Mountain West.
